This collection contains primarily landscape and cityscape views primarily taken by professional photographers at international sites during the last quarter of the 19th century. Photographers represented include Félix Bonfils, Kinbē Kusakabe, LaRoche Photo, Achille Mauri, Scowen & Co., J. Pascal Sébah, Sebah & Joaillier, and Giorgio Sommer. Only those images from Hawaii appear to have been made by an amateur photographer. Locations represented are Ceylon, Egypt, France, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, Turkey, and the United States (Alaska and Hawaii). All images are albumen prints, mounted on boards; all images from Japan are also hand-tinted.

The Bonfils family operated a photographic studio in Beirut from 1867 to 1918. Sommer, Giorgio, 1834-1914

German-born photographer Giorgio Sommer opened his photographic studio in Naples in 1857, and published Naples and Surroundings that same year. While his views and genre scenes catered to the tourist trade, Sommer was also keenly interested in documenting archaeological subjects. Sebah, Jean Pascal 1838-1910

Pascal Sébah opened his Constantinople (Istanbul) photography studio, which he later named El Chark, in 1857. It became one of the most successful studios in the city. He subsequently established a studio in Cairo in 1873. When Sébah suffered a brain hemorrage in 1883, his brother Cosmi, already a photographer with his own business, and Sébah's sixteen year-old son, Jean, took over the firm.
